Self catering holiday home in France with pool close to Mediterranean beaches in the Languedoc
Chichoulet enjoys an unrivalled position on the banks of the estuary of the Lâ€Aude. It has approximately 75m of frontage onto the river.
In the grounds there is a swimming pool, tennis court, swings, seesaw and trampoline. However, care should be taken with very young children due to the proximity of the river.
To one side of the house is a small marina and boatyard and sheds where oysters and mussels are wholesaled. Inland from the house is an area of salt flats which give way to vineyards.
You can walk out of the back of the house and buy trays of open oysters, mussels and prawns.
Another engaging feature is from the grounds the local fisherman, Jean Pierre, suspends a net across the river using an ancient method of fishing called the ‘Globeâ€. He is one of only two fishermen in France still using this method. All ages will be fascinated watching him in action.
Fishing boats and pleasure boats pass the property throughout the day.
The beaches of the Mediterranean are a walk away.
You can see the Mediterranean from the top windows of the house and on a clear day you can see the snow on the Pyrenees.
There is a large living room/ dining room, a large kitchen and a study on the ground floor.
Four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a shower room.
There is also a sofa bed in the study for visitors.
In the garden there is a swimming pool with diving board, a tennis court, a trampoline, swings and a seesaw.
There are boules and a table tennis table, which are kept in the garage.
You can also fish in the River Aude from the garden and if you are lucky and catch something, you can barbecue it on the brick barbecue in front of the house.
There are one adults and two childrenâ€s bicycles in the garage which you can use.
A short walk out of the garden and you can buy oysters, shrimp and other types of shellfish. A perfect end to the day is a bottle of the local wine and a plate of local oysters and shrimp as you watch the sun go down over the river.
Nearby is an excellent, inexpensive al fresco seafood restaurant.
A vineyard close by produces reasonably priced perfectly drinkable wines which they are happy to let you taste.
You can walk, cycle or drive to the sandy beaches.
The autoroute is only 8 minutes away from Chichoulet, which means you can reach Montpellier and its airport in 40-50 minutes, Sete in 30 minutes, Carcassonne in 1 hour, Narbonne in 30 minutes, Avignon in 2 hours and even Barcelona in just over 2 hours. So you can stay by the sea or venture inland to explore Languedoc and the land of the Cathars.
