Local area

Located between Cahors to the south and Gourdon to the north, La Grange is situated in the heart of the Bouriane area near the town of Catus (5km away).

There are many chateaux you can visit for a wine tasting and the local brewery also offers beer tasting. Cahors itself has an annual wine festival, as do a number of local villages and towns. The most famous of these being the Albas wine festival in June.

Just 2km to the west of Catus is Lac Vert, where you can swim, canoe, hire pedalos, play tennis, volley ball or table tennis. There is good fishing here in the season. Lac Vert also has two bars and restaurants.

There is a riding stables close by.

In the local area, there are many caves to visit as well as art galleries, museums, a go-kart track, parascending, canoeing, a lido with flumes and much more.

In July and August, Cahors has its Cahors Plage, an artificial beach and lido adjoining the river bank. Also in mid-July there is the famous Cahors Blues Festival.

Lac Vert

For golfers, Souillac Country Club has a beautiful 18 hole golf course that meanders through 120 acres of forest providing a challenge to golfers of all levels. This picturesque course offers everything for an excellent game, with breathtaking views. The ambiance at the club is relaxed and friendly (English spoken) with many other sporting activities and a Kid's Club. The golf course is 30 minutes drive from Bégot.

In July all the local villages have their annual parties (fêtes votives) and Catus is no exception. These parties feature fairground rides, stalls, live music, dancing and much more. They are usually three days duration ending with firework displays.

Catus has a good shopping centre with a pharmacy, butcher, hairdresser, bank,  supermarket (open 8am-8pm, 7 days a week), newsagent / tobacconist / bar bakery, post  office, electrical goods store, wine shop, bar / restaurant, and a formal restaurant.

There is a very helpful and enthusiastic tourist office which can help with all your needs to fully enjoy the region. Market day is Tuesday and there is a farmers' market Saturday mornings in "Les Halles", the newly restored covered market which ensures shelter from the sun or the rain.

There is an excellent restaurant in the local village which is in walking / cycling distance (also available are takeaway pizzas). They offer the typical 5-course set lunch menu including wine for around 13 euros.

Close by in Concores the bar hosts regular visits by Le Cod en Bleu which is an English run fish and chips van.

There is a good supermarket in Espere, ten minutes away and big supermarkets are sited in Prayssac, Gourdon and Cahors, all of which are about 20 minutes by car.

There are famous restaurants in close proximity (La Recreation in Les Arques about which the book From Here You Can't See Paris was written and Le Gindreau which has two Michelin Stars and was featured recently on ITV for  their prowess with truffles).

The local restaurant in Catus (L'Auberge) is truly top class and in the summer, the restaurant at Le Lac Vert is very good too, with a spectacular and very romantic view across the lake

If you fancy seeking out a bargain, there is an extensive brocante (antique/junk  shop) just on the other side of the valley (2km).

The Lot has many sites of interest, including caves with fascinating rock formations and, in several cases, cave paintings dating back to the dawn of time.

The town of Cahors was founded in 1 BC and still has much architecture remaining from medieval times.

The Valentre bridge in Cahors is the oldest in Europe and has an interesting and romantic history.

Nearby St Cirq Lapopie is among the most beautiful villages in France and a little further is Rocamadour  the shrine of St Amadour) with its spectacular position clinging to the cliffs, with the chateau perched above the church and the church above the village.

Paris is just five hours by train or autoroute.

Local airports are at Brive (closest), Bergerac (1 hour), Toulouse(1 hour), Rodez (2 hours) or Limoges (2 hours).

Cahors is on the main Paris to Toulouse train line. Next year it will be upgraded to a TGV service.
