Tarn holiday cottage with pool in Midi-Pyrenees, south of France.
The Barn is a recently converted French holiday cottage with swimming pool.
The Gite is situated in the tiny village of Roussergues next to the river Aveyron, in the very north of the Tarn close to the borders with the Tarn-et-Garonne and Aveyron regions.
4 / 5
Conversion of this barn into a fully equipped two bedroom cottage was completed in 2010.
The large living room is on the first floor. It has a double aspect, with view over the pool on one side and out towards Penne and the lovely limestone cliffs on the other.
There is a fully equipped galley kitchen including electric cooker, fridge with small freezer and dishwasher.
Also dining and sitting area for 6.
The corner sofa opens up to make an extra double bed if needed.
A Satellite TV showing English channels and DVD player is provided as well as a Radio / CD / ipod dock for music.
Wireless broadband is available and you may have free use of the telephone on request.
On the ground floor, there are two bedrooms, one with double bed, the second can be configured with double bed or two or three singles depending on your needs.
There is also a generous sized bathroom with wc, basin, bath and separate shower cubicle.
Next to The Barn, in what was the old vegetable plot, is our 10m x 5m swimming pool.
There is also an outside area with table and chairs and barbecue.
The pool enjoys the same view over the valley and Penne village looking south as the house.
We have plenty of loungers and sunshades.
We have installed the saline system of water purification so the water tastes slightly salty and you have no smell of chlorine at all.
The village of Roussergues has about nine houses. Our neighbours are friendly and helpful. Francis and Laurence live opposite and help us look after the house and keep the grass under control. Annie and André are retired farmers but will still sell you fresh eggs when they have a surplus.
The village of Penne-du-Tarn, with its wonderful teetering chateau (mostly ruined but now open to the public) is about 1km away. There are two bar / restaurants serving simple menus with views over the valley. There is also a grocer’s shop selling fresh bread as well as a Tourist Office which incorporates the post office.
About 3km out of Penne en route for the tiny village of St Paul de Mamiac is the tennis club with three good courts which are bookable at the Tourist Office in Penne.
The landscape is dominated by dramatic steep sided river valleys which are part of the Gorges d’Aveyron.
The river is about 2 minutes drive away and is a local favourite swimming spot. The house itself offers a wonderful view over the valley and the medieval village of Penne.
The nearest official caves (with lighting and guided tours) are the Grottes du Bosc on the other side of St Antonin with impressive rock formations.
St Antonin Noble Val is a lovely Roman small town with a maze of narrow streets in the centre. Its most recent claim to fame is that it was used as the location for the filming of Charlotte Grey and The Hundred Step Journey starring Helen Mirren.
There is a good choice of restaurants and a supermarket, very busy and fun market on Sundays. You can hire canoes here and spend a day boating down river towards Penne.
There are a number of large hypermarkets (the nearest to Penne is Leclerc in ZI nord).
Another pretty town, Gaillac is best known as the centre of a wine producing region. Both red and white distinctive wines are produced and, en route from our house to Gaillac, there are many wine producers to visit and sample their produce.
Cahors is the administrative capital of the Lot department and former capital of the Quercy region.
Albi, the capital of the Tarn department has a wonderful cathedral and the Toulouse Lautrec museum, both well worth a visit.
